Each autumn, Colorado’s San Juan Mountains transform into one of the most spectacular landscapes in the American West. In late September and early October, hillsides glow with luminous gold as vast stands of aspen reach their peak color, set against rugged peaks, winding mountain roads, and crisp alpine air. This photography workshop is designed to place you directly in the heart of that fleeting season.
Our base for the experience is the historic town of Durango, a welcoming mountain community that offers comfort, character, and convenient access to the surrounding landscapes. From here we venture into the San Juans to photograph some of the region’s most celebrated locations. Along the legendary Million Dollar Highway, golden aspen groves spill down steep mountainsides while dramatic peaks rise beyond them. Quiet forest roads and high mountain passes provide endless opportunities to capture light filtering through brilliant fall foliage.
The workshop also includes time to photograph the remarkable landscapes of Mesa Verde National Park, where sweeping desert vistas and ancient cliff dwellings tell a powerful story of the American Southwest. The contrast between vibrant mountain forests and the timeless architecture of this UNESCO World Heritage Site provides a rich range of photographic subjects.
Each day is spent exploring the landscape and working with changing light to create compelling images. Along the way, you will receive guidance on composition, technique, and creative vision to help you make the most of every location.
Evenings offer a chance to relax, share images, and enjoy good food and conversation with fellow photographers. It is these shared moments, along with the remarkable scenery, that make the experience both creatively rewarding and personally memorable.
