Vast horizons, ancient traditions, and a culture shaped by the open steppe make Mongolia one of the most remarkable places on Earth to photograph. Roughly the size of Alaska yet home to only three million people, this landlocked nation offers a rare sense of space and timelessness. Traveling here feels like stepping into another era.
On this exclusive photography expedition, renowned wildlife photographer Art Wolfe, assisted by Gavriel Jecan, will guide a small group of just eight participants through Mongolia’s dramatic landscapes and living traditions.
The journey begins in Ulaanbaatar before flying west to the remote region of Hovd, where the group will stay in a traditional wilderness ger camp hosted by a nomadic Kazakh eagle-hunting family. Over several days, participants will photograph life on the steppe, from eagle hunters on horseback to the daily rhythms of nomadic pastoralism. The surrounding Altai Mountains, with their snow-capped peaks and sweeping valleys, provide stunning opportunities for landscape photography.
A highlight of the expedition is the Naadam Festival, Mongolia’s legendary celebration of wrestling, archery, and long-distance horse racing. Entire communities gather dressed in traditional clothing while riders as young as four race across the steppe, creating unforgettable photographic moments.
The adventure continues at Hustai National Park, home to the rare Przewalski’s wild horses, where participants will photograph these remarkable animals roaming freely across the grasslands. The journey concludes with a special cultural encounter with local shamans and nomadic families.
All accommodations, meals, and transportation during the workshop are included; participants arrange their flights to Ulaanbaatar.
For photographers seeking sweeping landscapes, compelling wildlife, and authentic cultural experiences, Mongolia offers a journey unlike any other.
